The Art of Living Foundation, Los Angeles Center948 West Adams Blvd. Los Angeles CA 90007
The church entry leads through a narrow vestibule surmounted by a vaulted ceiling to the foyer, a large reception room with a beamed and paneled ceiling, wainscotted walls and a mosaic tile floor.
Inside the auditorium, the dome on pendentive, rising some 90 feet above the auditorium floor, creates an encircling grandeur. The buildings’s innovative structural engineer, Albert Martin, built the largest poured concrete dome of its time through an elaborate reinforcement of concrete girders and steel trusses. To the rear of the auditorium are Readers’, Directors’ and Clerks’ rooms and a loft to house the pipes for the organ – 3 manuals, 47 ranks – installed by Los Angeles’ first organ manufacturer of recognized ability.
The wealth of classical interior detailing includes garlands, dentils, cornices, pilasters, brackets and glass windows designed by Rosenheim himself. Pews and high-panelled wainscoting are select mahogany stained soft red. In all, the design presents an imposing heavenward building of classical beauty and spiritual harmony.
