We opened our Gallery and Coffeebar, Monkey Forest Road, in Oakland in December of 2011. Monkey Forest Road is the main street in Ubud, the cultural center of Bali, Indonesia, and we named our shop after it because when we first traveled to Bali over ten years ago, we instantly fell in love with not only the beautiful style of arts and crafts there, but also the great kindness and openness of the Balinese people. Through our travels, we met many local and expatriate artists whom were living and working all over Indonesia, and producing really incredible works of art, the likes of which we had never encountered in the United States, and in all different mediums. Several years ago, we decided to bring these amazing works to the U.S. by renovating a big old bank building in Oakland into an art gallery, along with a rad coffee bar that serves delicious Verve coffee and artisan baked goods. This venture has been a great success and we are proud to now be able to bring the spirit of our vibrant shop to the online community.
