Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The first musical success by the blockbuster team of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita), the genesis of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was as a 15-minute “pop cantata” written for a British elementary school. It was then produced as a concept album in 1969 and at various venues in the UK before opening off-Broadway in 1981 and making the leap to the Great White Way in 1982, where it ran for 747 performances and picked up six Tony nominations.

It’s rarely been off the stage since. The story is a colorful twist on the Old Testament tale of Joseph, whose father gives him a multi-hued cloak as a gift. Joseph’s jealous brothers sell him into slavery, and he ends up in Egypt, where he meets an Elvis-esque pharaoh and rescues the country from famine, before reconciling with his penitent brothers and reuniting with his joyful father.

The Weber-Rice score is also famed for its mix of musical styles, from French ballads (“Those Canaan Days”), ‘50s-era rock and roll (“Song of the King”) and country-western (“One More Angel In Heaven”) to 1920s Charleston (“Potiphar”), calypso (“Benjamin Calypso”) and jazz ("Joseph’s Dreams").

This all-time family favorite is one of the world’s most performed musicals, and one of its most beloved.

It was okay. I didn't particularly care for how they changed the musical numbers...I guess it was to make the show more humorous...it didn't work.

Incredible show at a venue that I have never heard of. It was great to see this amazing talented cast of color perform one of my all-time favorite shows. This is a theatre gem!

It was a great performance, very ambitious for a community theatre. It incorporated a group of 20 little kids (3 to 7 year olds), and another group of slightly older kids besides the teens and adults. Everybody performed with great enthusiasm. ...continued

What a great theater! Our first time. Really high-energy community production with large cast and some strong leads. The toddlers were ridiculously cute as a flock of sheep... Good cookies, too, but priced to raise funds for future efforts.
