About Hamilton

Lyrics from this show may say "History is happening in Manhattan," but history is truly happening in Chicago now that Hamilton's in town. Be in the room where it happens for the global phenomenon, and see why Hamilton is still so revolutionary after nearly a decade.

Hamilton reimagines the story of inaugural U.S. Treasury Secretary as anyone might expect: with rap and hip-hop, of course. Tony-, Grammy, and Pulitzer-winning creator Lin-Manuel Miranda puts a 21st-century musical spin on an 18th-century story, using gripping music and a diverse cast to share how Hamilton went from a poor immigrant from the Caribbean to George Washington's pioneering right-hand man and, ultimately, the political foe of Aaron Burr, the man who'd shoot him in an infamous duel.

A near-instant megahit in New York, Hamilton is now an unmissable hip-hop history lesson all over the world. If you ever thought history was boring in school, this musical at the James M. Nederlander Theatre will make you think again.

Hamilton highlights

Hamilton premiered in New York in 2015, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's show has enjoyed non-stop success ever since. The 2016 Tony Awards were dubbed the "Hamiltonys," as the musical won 11 awards, including Best Musical, out of a record-setting 16 nominations.

  • Miranda is one of the most accomplished modern theatre composers. Before Hamilton, Miranda composed In the Heights, another Best Musical winner inspired by his home neighborhood in New York. He's since gone on to compose music for Disney movies like Encanto and is one Oscar away from an EGOT — the distinction of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
  • Hamilton has tons of big-name fans. Ever since Miranda won over former President Barack Obama with the opening number in 2009, numerous celebrities and politicians have attended the show. Beyoncé, Daniel Radcliffe, and U.S. President Joe Biden are just a few.
  • Hamilton has a tune for every kind of music lover. The bulk of the score is rap and hip-hop, but Miranda peppers in jazz and traditional Broadway styles, too. The eclectic, varied music is just one of the things that keeps Hamilton entertaining and fresh at every moment.
