I'm really sorry to say that this was a total bust. The Tempest is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays - and I really enjoy avant-garde productions when they highlight, enhance, and make sense of the complexities of the script. But this was...continued

I'm always amazed at how timeless Shakespeare's work is. The cast and stage were captivating; making the show moving, unique, funny and full of surprises.

I'm normally not a fan of avant-garde productions and modern/contemporary interpretations of Shakespeare, but the Steppenwolf did an amazing job.

I highly recommend this production of the Tempest for those looking to stretch their imagination.

My husband and I both LOVED this production. It was innovative, slightly irreverant but stuck to the theme in the most creative way. The direction was great as was the casting, for the most part, with the exception of Miranda who we felt was weak....continued

I can understand why Steppenwolf has not produced any of Shakespear's plays in the past: "They don't have the talent". I have seen better middle school productions.

an exciting thrill ride through a classic Shakespeare tale. the sights and sounds meshed well with the theme and really gave life and activity to what could have been (for those not well versed in the linguistics of Shakespearean tales) a drab...continued

I loved this production. I thought it was innovative and enjoyable. The music and dancing and stagecraft were terrific. I loved the creativity of this production and did not think it was weird or distracting at all.

I love seeing re-imaginings of Shakespeare's works because so many modern concepts/technologies/fashions/interpretations/etc. can be applied to the plays. Because I have enjoyed Steppenwolf productions in the past, I was excited to see what they...continued

Alac, the acting just didn't capture the beauty of the writing. Shakespeare has a rhythm and these actors did not.

BRILLIANT production! Some really amazing stagecraft - Frank Galati as Prospero and the young man playing Ariel were both outstanding, as were the 3 gymnastic and highly athletic "sprites." We did occasionally have a hard time understanding some...continued

Steppenwolf's production of "The Tempest" is excellent, a must-see for Shakespeare fans as well as for those who are not as familiar with the bard. It offers much food for thought through its layered then and now context, and its eclectic mixture...continued

It is an innovative and yet perfectly sound interpretation of a strange play. I felt I learned more about the Tempest by watching this play.

Like the bit of the review I just noticed on this site, I did not like this show very much at all.

I had to question myself whether I really appreciate avant-garde or simply different interpretations, or, as I get older, I just like things the...continued

For the most part I enjoyed the play, but the dialog was sometimes difficult to hear. The voices sounded puny and were lost in the vastness of the theater.

liked it a lot - except for a scene towards the opening of the second act where "the Harpy" ? was moving his wings and speaking whatever -totally unintelligibly. Some characters stronger than others, of course, with Frank Galati at one end of...continued

Galati's Prospero was outstanding,if overshadowed. Ariel's role was energetic and fun.The stagecraft was a bit over the top, but fun. While not the way I read the play,it was fun and a spectacle.

Outstanding staging was the highlight of this show. The acting ranged from fine to so-so. Im not sure the adaptation of the text used to get it down to a reasonable two acts served it well. It seems to have left the play too condensed with the...continued

I feel I must counter other reviews that portray the production as 'weird for weird' sake. We felt that it was a very intelligent treatment of the play, that it brought out a number of interesting themes, and that the modern elements are...continued

I read some of the other reviews, but I did enjoy some of it. I thought some of the acting was just okay, but the energy level was good.
