The play tried to handle too many issues - education, racism, sexism, red baiting, war, art criticism and the role of art in society... However it was well acted and engaging and did raise some interesting questions. Definitely worth checking out.

I thought the play was wonderful, very moving, entertaining while educating. Because I know people who went to Hampton and a bit of the history of HBCUs, I found much truth and "reality" in the show. I plan on seeing it again with my daughter or...continued

It was interesting to see the early lives of 2 African-American art luminaries brought to the stage. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about them to say how accurate the play is or the performances are...but it was still very entertaining.

The play was very educational about the importance of Hampton Institute and the black artists who were nurtured there in the 1940s, but there was no drama or dynamic tension between the characters. It was rather dry and didactic, and ultimately...continued

I was entertained and learned a lot of history about Hampton Institute/Hampton University ( how the art program was started).

I was so surprised. I did not expect and education on art, Hamton U and John Bigger. This was a good story about an important entity in this country and to African Americans.

This is definitely worth seeing. The play topic is unusual and most interesting, and the play addresses a number of issues insightfully -- from what is art to individual courage to discrimination. The set is impressive, and the acting is a good B.

I learned so much in this informative, well-acted, well-written play. I had never heard of John Biggers, and looked him up at home to learn more. I didn't know about the German Jewish refugees getting jobs at black universities, or of the...continued

I took my 86-year old father, who was stationed in Hampton, VA in 1943-44, and his wife to this play as their 25th anniversary gift. We thoroughly enjoyed The Hampton Years. My daughter also graduated from Hampton University 7 years ago and I've...continued
