I had such high expectations, fueled primarily by the marketing hype and my own passion for experimental theater and theatrical innovation in general. The cast was undoubtedly talented. Unfortunately the storyline, which was all of two paragraphs...continued

I loved the story of The Secret Garden and wanted to have it come alive for my children as well. The musical version of the story was so wonderful, I mistakenly thought that this would be similar, not understanding that this was a new work by the...continued

The set design and costumes were beautiful! But the music was very disappointing. There seemed to be no melody at all. The musical was so much better.

We thoroughly enjoyed the new opera, especially Mary, who looks and moves like a child but has the most amazing and beautiful mature soprano voice. Colin had a great voice, and Denkan, his mother and sister were all great. The sets were well...continued

This was pretty bad ... we left at the intermission .. don't think I've ever done that before. I love opera but this opera was awful .... the music was discordant and even though some of the voices were good (they were from SF Opera Co.) it was...continued

I liked the use of screens and projections in the sets. As I read reviews before I attended, I thought people were being too hard on the music since I figured it was opera; but I agree that the music was dull, although well played. There was just...continued

Superb! Great production, loved the sets and multi-media show. It was visually stunning, and really brought to life the wonderful story in a very touching, poignant way. I loved it!

A little too boring! Music sounded too fragmented. Good sets and visuals.

I could not get into the music at all. No melodic lines and lacking structures.

This was a visually stunning production of the classic children's story. While I enjoyed myself thoroughly, my 11 year old daughter did not. The music is not accessible for a "family production" and it felt to her like the characters were just...continued

The staging was very good. The music was adequate. I think the 10 year old child characters should have been played by children. The actors' voices were very adult. Still, lovely familiar childhood story.

The best part of the opera was the production. The music was interesting, contemporary and I think accessible to children. The story itself is a little boring for adults but my daughter loved it.
A few crying children during the performance -...continued

Loved the singers, the costumes, and the sets. Did not think much of the music.

I can't say enough about this production; it's the real deal!
Casting was superb, the singers were all perfectly cast in terms of appearance and voice. Standouts included Sarah Shafer, who looked the part of the little girl, Mary, but...continued

SPECTACULAR - visually and music was great, too. Highly recommend it.

The settings were beautiful and imaginitive, but the music was not satisfying to me. It was not melodic and needed a lot more "singing," than "taking." Also, there was no "choreography" in the movement of the players.

This was my first opera, and I realize I don't like it that much. To me it lacked the emotional depth that a play conveys. Both my friend and I actually fell asleep in the 2nd act.

I thought this performance was dreadful. Since my friend agreed, we left at intermission. We kept waiting for an aria or some nice music but got none. Merely putting commentary to toneless music does not constitute an opera.

It was visually compelling. The use of computer graphics and cinematography looked amazing. The score was mediocre but singing was good.
