A lot of the performance was presented as a narrator telling a story to the audience. I would have preferred more acting, less story telling. I particularly enjoyed the actor playing the role of the orphan (Daisuke Tsuji, I believe).

Another fine scenic design by Daniel Ostling surrounding a strained production of an essentially boring, hyper emotional story. The banal dialogue made a cast of mostly fine actors seem like semi-amatures working very hard at their larger than...continued

Wasn't crazy about this translation, last scene between son and doctor tied up that loose end but didn't slip in gracefully to the rhythm of the play. Enjoyed the complex story, enjoyed the performance, just thought it could be better. You know...continued

What a TREAT! This was an EXCELLENT play. The story was mesermizing and I LOVED that the characters would explain who they were and what they were doing or cared about - provided perspective and I think that's what kept the story alive.
The music...continued

Many of my friends have seen this and they have either loved it of hated it. We LOVED it. Everything about it was superb from the staging, scenery, music, acting, story, and choreography. I do recommend that you read a synopsis of the story...continued

The play was great. The Goldstar seats sucked. I am a Red Velvet customer and usually get decent seats. There were several Goldstar customers around me and we were all disappointed with our seats. It was hard to enjoy the play from the outside...continued

A very good story, not familiar or ordinary to this westerner. An interesting production - strong performances all around, but some unusual overly-expository writing and direction, as well as some music and songs that are not melodic in a...continued

I am not sure why this production got so much bad press. It was very well done. Obviously it was an epic story and 2 1/2 hours can't really cover all the details. But, just like "The White Snake" at the Berkeley Rep. last year; it was the...continued

Well done stylized piece. If one doesn't appreciate the genre, it may seem stiff. I was moved by the production, the story, and the result. One of the better productions I've seen at ACT.

saw 1st preview, needs some restaging esp ending - huge grey silk canopy awkward & distracts fr tenderness of scene; some devices work theatrically, like movable stand for princess and collapse of hanging silk at death of villain...worth seeing,...continued

The play relies on cultural assumptions about sacrifice and absolute loyalty that are so different from modern western society's that they are hard to understand or accept. But unlike my seatmate, I could suspend my disbelief, and found Orphan...continued

This is an ancient Chinese tale brought to life by ACT. The actors did a wonderful job conveying the unwavering loyalty that drove their heart-breaking decisions. This is a play with a high body-count and few moments of levity, so be prepared for...continued

I was delighted to get a good orchestra aisle seat (ACT's theater seats are staggered, so visibility is pretty good there).
The staging was quite clever, and the musical accompaniment quite appropriate. I hadn't expected singing, but it enlivened...continued

The Orphan of Zhao was an interesting study of family honor, personal commitment and sacrifice. I enjoyed watching how well the small-cast played multiple roles.
