During the last days of Charles Mingus' illness, the jazz legend's wife asked him if he intended to "come back" after death. Mingus smiled and replied, "I'm never going to leave." This prophecy has certainly come to pass with a number of tribute ensembles touring the country and ensuring the legacy of one of jazz's most ingenious performer-composers. Chief among these groups is the Mingus Big Band, the "best jazz orchestra in the world" according to the Washington Post
. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, the composer's widow and muse, the group recently won a Grammy (after seven previous nominations) for its album Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard
. Come hear Mingus' music -- and maybe even experience his spirit -- when this world-class band takes the stage at the Rialto Center for the Arts.
