One-Woman Show From Marga Gomez: Latin Standards
Latin Standards was named a The New York Times "Critic's Pick" for its "winning heart and humor" and is peppered with characterizations the San Francisco Chronicle called "impossible to resist." GLAAD award winner Marga Gomez's 12th and final solo performance is the story of Gomez's late father, a blustery Cuban comedian and songwriter who insisted Marga become a doctor. As an impractical tribute to his memory, Marga defies reason and in 2012 launched a hipster comedy night at "Esta Noche," a Mission district Latino drag club with terrible Yelp reviews, during the onset of San Francisco's gentrification crisis. Her stylish girlfriend saw no potential in Marga's new project and Marga copes with getting dumped by listening for clues in the recordings of her father's "Latin Standards," dance tunes steeped in jealousy, obsession, and guitars. Described by the San Francisco Examiner as "Elegantly structured and expertly staged, it's both touching and funny".
