Trio of Plays in Unclear Family Rep: Smudge, Bleed & Benched
Pinky Swear Productions explores dark and messy family dynamics through a trifecta of plays penned by female playwrights and performed in repertory -- a pair of world premieres from local writers, plus Rachel Axler's Off-Broadway hit Smudge. Bleed, the new work by award-winning playwright Renee Calarco, finds a couple at a turning point in their marriage, and in Allyson Currin's debut comedy Benched, a trio of playground moms finds their friendship on the ropes. Currin's also an award winner, who's the author of more than 20 plays. Those one-acts will appear in rep with Smudge by the Emmy Award-winning Axler (Parks and Recreation, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart). Expectant parents Nick and Colby are looking forward to a normal, happy life with their newborn. But their expectations crumble when something turns out to be very wrong with their offspring, a one-eyed being that Colby refers to as a "smudge." Laced with both horror and laughter, Smudge follows the couple as they struggle with the meaning of life and their capacity to love.
