Nine-time Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpet virtuoso Wynton Marsalis brings his acclaimed 2008 composition Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration
to Boston Symphony Hall. Abyssinian
is an ambitious work that celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, which played a key role in the development of religious music during the Harlem Renaissance. Marsalis' masterwork includes modernist variants of New Orleans dirges and struts, spirituals, "hard-bop" and Duke Ellington-inspired riffs on big-band brassy interplay in a work that brilliantly fuses the sacred and the secular. In this performance, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra revisits this critically acclaimed musical work, adding the 70-voice gospel choir Chorale Le Chateau, conducted by Damien Sneed.
