Devil in the White City Walking Tour1503 E 57th St Chicago, IL 60637
The experience begins at Powell's Books -- located five minutes from the Museum of Science and Industry (or MSI) -- in Jackson Park. You'll head into the park and see some buildings and landmarks left over from the 1892 Columbian Exposition. This area was known as White City, an architectural and technological marvel that attracted visitors from all over the world. It was Chicago's World's Fair and was going to outshine the previous one held in Paris in 1889, where the Eiffel Tower was introduced. In the park, you'll walk behind the MSI, which was actually the main entrance to the Fine Arts Building during the Expo. There are structures that remain from the fair and a lot of great vistas as you walk towards the Wooded Island and the Garden of the Phoenix. Yoko Ono's sculpture, "Skylanding" is also here. Then you'll cross onto the Midway Plaisance, passing by the former site of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and the site of the Obama Presidential Center. This is also where the world was introduced to the Ferris Wheel in the summer of 1893. As you wind your way back to the bookstore, you'll will pass by some of the oldest homes in the area, dating back to the 1870s on historic Harper Avenue.
