Eastern European Delights explores the transformation of simple folk melodies into captivating works of art. Martinu was a prolific composer, often using folk melodies from his native Czechoslovakia with wit and charm in his innovative Neoclassical works. Dohnanyi, by contrast, imbued folk tunes from his native Hungary with his own romanticism, emotion, and lushness. The program closes with the elegantly brilliant and rhythmically gripping Variations on a Theme of Pergolesi by Czech composer Ilja Hurnik, commissioned by Rembrandt Chamber Musicians in 1995. MARTINU: Promenades for flute, violin, and harpsichord, H. 274 MARTINU: Quartet for oboe, violin, cello, and piano, H. 315 DOHNANYI: Piano Quintet No. 1 in C Minor, op. 1 HURNIK: Variations on a Theme of Pergolesi for flute, oboe, violin, viola, cello, and piano (Commissioned by Rembrandt Chamber Players in 1995) GUEST ARTISTS David Perry, violin
