Creepy clowns are It right now, and there's none creepier, or more tragic, than Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. The revenge-filled jester at the center of Victor Hugo's drama encourages the lecherous duke he serves to seduce a young woman, resulting in a curse -- and disaster for Rigoletto's own beautiful daughter. This moving masterpiece boasts the famous tune "La donna è mobile," an instant hit that was sung throughout the streets and canals of Venice almost immediately after the opera's 1851 premiere. Check out this new-to-Chicago production, performed in Italian with projected English translations, at the Lyric Opera House.
