The Sondheim specialists at Theatre Three reprise their 1991 version of Assassins
, one of the earliest post-Broadway productions of this acclaimed musical, as part of Dallas' 50th anniversary remembrance of the Kennedy assassination. The darkly comic and compelling look at the lives, loves and legacies of nine presidential assassins -- including John Wilkes Booth, Squeaky Fromme and Lee Harvey Oswald -- takes a warped but tuneful tour through history, as it explores the dark underbelly of the American Dream. As the musical fleshes out the characters of the killers (or would-be killers) within the framework of a grisly carnival game, the revue-style portrayal compels the audience to consider the part our celebrity culture plays in creating these monsters, while the score takes on a variety of genres to reflect the popular music throughout the various eras.
