Arcadia: Tom Stoppard's Clever Comedy
In an English country estate, a pair of scholars sift through a haphazard trove of historical documents related to the estate's sprawling gardens. There's a chance that that Lord Byron once visited the estate, killing a man in a duel, and the scholars are competing to uncover the historic truth. Meanwhile, in 1809, the 13-year-old Lady Thomasina Coverly has become preoccupied with a strange notion: that underneath the seeming randomness and chaos of the world lies a predictable, mathematical order. As the lines between past and present become increasingly blurred, the world of the play begins to echo the nearly-lost discoveries of the world's first chaos theorist. By turns touching, funny, and thought-provoking, Tom Stoppard's Arcadia is a masterful exploration of the tension between (and reconciliation of) the Classical and the Romantic, the ordered and the disordered, and the eventual and the never-quite-becoming.
