OK, Tom Brady, Chad Ochocinco, Wes Welker and a few other top Patriots did not play. Aww Shucks. It's preseason and those guys rarely play--it's not worth the risk. You do get to see up and coming players, players fighting to become starters and players working hard just to make the team. You get to see players who you might not be familiar with. Remember that pro football has almost a 100% injury rate, so many of these guys will be playing during the regular season. That's why I watch pre season football.
I was very pleasantly surprised with the ticket I got. I was expecting to sit in the upper deck. I brought my spotting scope with me. I got a seat in the middle deck, Section 205, which was a lot better than I expected. I put my spotting scope away.
If you go, take the Patriots train. For a 7:30 game, it leaves South Station at 4:10, making stops at Back Bay and Dedham. It beats fighting traffic on Rt495 and paying $30 to park there. Seating is somewhat limited, so either buy your train ticket a day in advance or plan on getting to South Station 45 minutes early. If you have fan gear, wear it--just before the train leaves, the conductors walk through South Station rounding-up fans who might have missed the boarding announcement.
Also, remember that this is a No Backpacks zone (unless by prior arrangement for those who are disabled with a legitimate medical need). If you accidentally bring one, you're not supposed to leave it on the train. (Well, you can do that, but there's no guarantee that it will be there when you return... but it usually is there.) They do search bags, mostly looking for food, drink and the usual stadium contraband and you will be pat down. Ladies, large purses are OK.
