Joined by several special guests, the Fremont Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary with a season-opening musical trip that goes around the world and back through the centuries. World Tour: Unity
pays tribute to the community's cultural diversity, kicking off with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. From Russia, it's off to China and Japan with soloist Hecheng Liu on the traditional pipa and koto master Shirley Muramoto. Irish tenor Liam Tiernan is set to appear, as is American gospel mezzo-soprano Erica Richardson and chorus, who'll perform "'Til We Reach That Day," from the Broadway musical Ragtime
. Carlos and Julio Reyes represent South America with a Paraguayan harp and acoustic guitar duet, while maestro Gregory Van Sudmeier and the orchestra picks up the rest of the itinerary, with selections from the Slumdog Millionaire
and Cinema Paradiso
scores, Claude Debussy's classic French Clair de Lune,
and finally, back to Russia for a Mussorgsky finale of The Great Gate of Kiev
