It's "comedy tonight" in Stephen Sondheim's laugh-out-loud musical, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. In this season opener, travel with STAGEStheatre to ancient Rome and experience the zany antics of Pseudolus, a slave on a quest for freedom. This slapstick musical sings and dances its way through mistaken identities, a house full of courtesans and an elaborate web of lies that all lead to an uproarious night in the theater. The winner of six Tony Awards, this is one of the funniest musicals ever written. Sondheim and comic writer Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H, Tootsie) seamlessly combine situations from the timeless comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the fast-paced, slapstick energy of classic vaudeville to create a nonstop entertainment extravaganza. Eating Raoul is directed by Jack Millis, who directed the smash hit The Great American Trailer Park Musical last year at STAGEStheatre. Millis loves the idea of taking the classic film and turning it on its ear. “I’ve always been attracted to the off the wall, unconventional musicals. And, like The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Eating Raoul is a wildly campy, hilarious romp down the oh-so-twisted rabbit hole. There is just something about rooting for the underdog--even if that underdog is committing a murder, most delicious!” says Millis.
