From jazz to gospel, big band to R&B, the African-American community's contributions to 20th-century popular music cannot be overstated. Now The Blue Dolphin celebrates the timeless music of these legendary artists and performers with their special Black Music Month
tribute concert series. This series kicks off with a salute to big bands and orchestras with a special performance by the Bowie State University Community Jazz Orchestra directed by Dr. Clarence Knight, the cousin of Gladys Knight. The second stop on the journey celebrates the spirituals and gospel music of Marian Anderson, Kathleen Battle and Yolanda Adams, featuring performances by opera singer Renee Barnes and gospel artists Rob Mercer, Ronette Harrison, Jimmy Russell and Because of Christ. R&B and jazz vocalist Jean Carne wraps up the celebration performing her soulful sounds.
