Hairspray: Tony-Winning Musical Bops Back to the '60s
When plus-sized dreamer Tracy Turnblad becomes a dancer on a popular local TV show, she transforms herself from a shunned outsider to a true teen celebrity and sets a course to triumph over both snotty teen queens and racial segregation in Hairspray. Set in 1962 Baltimore and based on the movie by John Waters, Hairspray won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score, for such Marc Shaiman-penned hit songs as "Welcome to the '60s," "You Can't Stop the Beat" and "Good Morning Baltimore." And then it was turned back into a popular 2007 movie, starring John Travolta and Nikki Blonsky. But there's nothing like seeing this always energetic and upbeat musical live on stage. This Hale Centre Theatre production is directed and choreographed by the award-winning Cambrian James, who also plays Edna Turnblad.
