Beautiful production values and enthusiastic performances from the kids... however they were virtually unintelligible due to their terrible accents. It was sad because you could see how much effort went into the performance.

I just don't think this is something high school kids --no matter how talented-- can pull off. They tried, but they're kids. I think the material was too sophisticated for them.

Description

This ribald classic depicts the British underclass striving to achieve love, money and prestige, by hook or by crook. Macheath is a lady’s man and thief whose loyal wife and saucy girlfriend battle for his favors while their quirky and conniving parents conspire to do him in and steal his pilfered fortune. In an era when high-brow Italian opera owned the stage, John Gay stole the show with this timeless satire, using popular melodies and common language to mock the moral corruption of the day.

In the eleven years that the Full Circle Opera Project has been in existence, it has developed into one of the finest high school based opera programs in the nation. Under the skilled leadership of Ms. Stephanie Vlahos, an elite group of students at LA Arts High have deepened their love for all forms of music and honed their talent and their professionalism to extraordinary levels. Earlier FCOP productions that have thrilled audiences include Street Scene, Annie, Candide, Marriage of Figaro, West Side Story, Cinderella, Orpheus in the Underworld, and Tales of Hoffman.
