Kander & Ebb's Zorba
Prolific and ever versatile composers Kander and Ebb transport you to Greece with one of their most beautifully evocative scores. With a book by Joseph Stein, we meet the exuberant and passionate Zorba as he befriends a fledgling American writer who confronts his own life choices when he falls in love with a local widow. As it's bluntly sung at the top of show, "Life is what you do while you're waiting to die." It's earthy, practical and ultimately true. Based on Nikos Kazantzakis' 1952 novel and the subsequent 1964 Academy Award-winning film Zorba the Greek, Zorba opened on Broadway in 1968 in a production starring Hershel Bernardi and directed by Harold Prince. It ran for 305 performances and was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, with Boris Aronson winning for his scenic design. It was revived on Broadway in 1983 starring Anthony Quinn. Zorba will be directed by Alan Bailey, musical directed by Brad Ellis, choreographed by Cheryl Baxter-Ratliff, and is under the production supervision of John Massey.
