Oscar Wilde's Witty Comedy, An Ideal Husband
The legendary wit of Oscar Wilde is on full display in An Ideal Husband, a wickedly funny yet emotionally resonant comedy that weaves together blackmail, political corruption and public and private honor. The Douglas Morrisson Theatre's sparkling world premiere adaptation updates the story to 1950s Washington, D.C. when, much like England at the height of the British empire, Americans felt confident that their country was the greatest in the world and assured that U.S. actions would always impact the world in the grandest possible way. The story follows Robert Chiltern, who seems to have the perfect life -- a beautiful wife, a bright political future, a promising family and engaging friends. Fate catches up to him when a mysterious woman produces a letter revealing a past misdeed. One of Wilde's more serious social comedies, An Ideal Husband focuses on the often corrupt underpinnings of wealth and power and also takes a good-natured poke at the institution of marriage, asking us if it's it truly possible to try to have an "ideal" marriage.
