Not in a million years could a film like Hollywood Canteen
(1944) be replicated. Warner Brothers emptied out its stable of stars for this wartime picture celebrating the nightclub for WWII servicemen. If they were famous -- and not off fighting -- they were in this movie. Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, John Garfield, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Barbara Stanwyck all appear, while Jack Benny, Jimmy Dorsey, the Andrew Sisters and Roy Rogers provide musical entertainment. Set amidst the glittering cameos is a gem of story: Robert Hutton plays a GI lucky enough to be the legendary club's millionth customer, winning himself a date with the dreamy actress Joan Leslie. The program starts with a slide show from Lisa Mitchell and Bruce Torrence, authors of The Hollywood Canteen: Where the Greatest Generation Danced With the Most Beautiful Girls in the World
. Make sure to come early, as both authors will be signing their work in the Egyptian lobby at 1:00pm.
