Anne Frank and Me: Modern Teen Finds Herself Face-to-Face With Anne
Despite the haunting intimacy of her diary, Anne Frank is an abstraction for many young people, another distant figure from their summer reading lists, little different than Huckleberry Finn or Oliver Twist. The genius of Anne Frank and Me is how this award-winning play makes Anne's plight newly relevant to young and old alike. The story's protagonist is Nicole Burns, a contemporary teenager whose own thoughts about the Holocaust hover somewhere between suspicion and disinterest. But in an extraordinary sequence, Nicole is teleported from the present day into war-torn Europe circa 1942. There she eventually meets the flesh-and-blood Anne Frank and in doing so encounters neither a fanciful character nor a dusty historical figure, but a real girl of incredible courage and humanity. Pearland Theatre Guild's founder Renee van Nifterik directs this show already hailed as "a new American classic" at the Pearl Theater.
