Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew Gets a 1950s Treatment
Enjoy a classic Shakespearean battle of the sexes with a twist in this production of The Taming of the Shrew set in the 1950s. It's the perfect era for the tale of a man who's head-over-heels in love with a woman, but her father calls the shots. And he insists that the younger of his two daughters cannot be wed before her strong-willed, less popular and less beautiful sister is married. Problem is, no man will marry the hardheaded young woman. That is, until a fortune-hunting lothario arrives on the scene and agrees to woo and wed the older sister -- for a sizable sum, of course. Singing, dancing, and other surprises add to the fun as the battle of the sexes ensues. UpStage has added an additional twist to this traditionally very misogynistic story that opens up whole new possibilities as to the motivations of the characters.
