Statement from the choreographer:

“Grounded in 23 individual solos, the work uses radical juxtaposition of both movement and sound. Ranging from spooky to saucy, the movement is pulled from the everyday and speaks of the beauty in the mundane, right here right now. In creating the solos for each dancer involved in the work, Rehearsal Assistant, Karinne Kiethly and I looked for where we could ‘meet’ each participant, to find their strengths, humor and power. These are scattered through the piece, framed by groupings that range from contained and eerie to near chaos. I never begin making work from a specific intention. I take images to the dancers and respond to what arises to enter into a dialogue with the piece as it takes on life. The work became ‘about’ its dancers, their energy and the contexts I could create for it and out of it. I invited the arbitrary, the ridiculous, the exaggerated, the uncool.”

Statement from the choreographer:

The title for Pieces of Wood took a long time. Other titles including Terrarium, Africanized Bees, and Woody made the short list. This was a situation in which the difficulty came from too many possibilities rather than too few. As a result, the three movements of the dance each have a name. Clapping and Square Dance will speak (hopefully loudly) for themselves, and Swarm emerged as the likeliest title for a dance which features ninety-nine performers. Each movement is set to the music of the legendary American composer, Steve Reich. His percussive, elegant scores provide the backbone of the piece. In his Clapping Music, the dancers first provide the music and then later the dance. In Music for Pieces of Wood, performed by the Horangee Blut Quartet, the dancers behave like a rigorously organized insect colony; each individual dances necessarily to realize the goal of the the hive.

“The initial intent of the work was to capture the youth as I saw and heard them in their day to day lives. I wanted to get to know them again, learn what it was like to walk in their shoes and hear their natural voices. We sang, we made noises, we danced, but mostly we talked.

Through this process we created material that was later deconstructed and re-assembled to show the nuances in their lives, teasing out how pop culture has influenced their walk, their talk, and their song.

The art we make at The Wooden Floor usually involves an intense process of discovery and risk, often unveiling difficult themes. From those themes social commentary emerged on the stereotypes that affect minority youth. In the larger talking parts the dancers are improvising, having just then received the topic or determining for themselves what they will talk about, again, with courage, they are assuming risk. Seeing what emerges in improvisation, which is a learnt skill, can be thrilling and fresh. The True or False statements in the piece became emblematic of the intent of the work; they challenge possible assumptions, they reveal information while protecting the speakers, and they can deliver messages that will hopefully engage the viewer in having to access an internal dialogue in regards to the issues raised. My job will be done if you leave feeling like you got a whiff of who these wonderful young people are."
