Composer Art Kaufman actually owns a song-poem recording business, where amateur wordsmiths can send in their poetry and have it set to music -- for a fee of course. For Song-Poems Wanted! The Musical he used lyrics from real-life customers to create an unforgettable journey through the hopes, dreams, lonesome ramblings and twisted rants of a group of aspiring poets and musicians whose lives are connected by the fictitious song-poem recording company Star Records. The unforgettable cast of characters ranges from sleazy Star Records owner Sharkey, who "grinds out songs like sausages," to Captain Bicycle, a zany nerd who dreams of fixing the planet through the power of Jesus Christ, big-breasted women, and good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll. It can be hard to find authenticity in this city, but if that's what you are looking for, this is it! A friendly community theater with a first-rate production in an intimate theater setting (e.g., you are right next to the stage). Great casting on Stella, Stanley, and Blanche.
This production is produced by four women, all independent artists and teachers, each of whom has been personally and artistically compelled by this haunting, sinful and delicious play.
