Wagner's Die Walkure
is the second opera in his famous Ring of the Nibelung
cycle. Boston Symphony Opera performs Act 3 of the opera, which opens with one of the best known pieces of opera music of all time, "The Ride of the Valkyries." Even if you're not familiar with the opera, you've probably heard "Ride of the Valkyries" in the film Apocalypse Now
or the Bugs Bunny short, "What's Opera, Doc?" The third act of Die Walkure
centers on Brunnhilde, a Valkyrie. The Valkyries are divine warrior women who are daughters of the Norse god Wotan. Brunnhilde has disobeyed her father and is to be punished. About to be stripped of her Valkyrie status and left a defenseless mortal, Brunnhilde eloquently pleads for mercy from her beloved father. In BSO's production, Brunnhilde is played by Katarina Dalayman, one of the world's most sought after dramatic sopranos.
