Pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine solos on Richard Strauss' technically-challenging grand waltz Burleske, written in flashy Franz Liszt style, as music director Enrique Arturo Diemecke and the Long Beach Symphony join him and perform works by Britten and Revueltas. Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, a tribute to the music of 17th century composer Henry Purcell, opens the concert, and Silvestre Revueltas' La noche de los Mayas, written by the Mexican composer in 1939 as a theme to a movie about the Mayans, provides the pounding finale, set to feature 11 percussionists. Enjoy the snack, hot-drink and cocktail bar in the lobby, and a pre-concert discussion starting an hour before curtain.
