Dolly Gallagher Levi, played most notably by Carol Channing and Barbra Streisand, is an American institution! For two nights only we get a chance to see this touching and hilarious classic performed by the best and the brightest of Los Angeles’ young stage performers. The renowned Musical Theatre Ensemble of LA County High School for the Arts breaths new life into this revival, and brings us back to the days when life was simple and falling in love was just plain grand.
HELLO, DOLLY! is an ebullient and irresistible story of the joy of living, glittering with happy songs, shining with loving scenes, alive with the personality of one of the most fabulous characters on the musical stage…Dolly Gallagher Levi! Classic musical numbers include Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Ribbons Down My Back, Before the Parade Passes By, Elegance, It Only Takes A Moment and So Long, Dearie. It’s debut on Broadway in 1963-4 was heralded with 10 Tony Awards for Musical, Actress, Author, Producer, Director, Composer and Lyricist, Conductor and Musical Director, Scenic Designer, Costume Designer and Choreographer. It also won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical of 1964. To see Hello, Dolly! performed by this amazing ensemble of young artists is an opportunity no lover of musical theatre should miss.
In the twenty years that LA County High School for the Arts has been in existence, it has developed into one of the finest arts high schools in the nation. Under the leadership of artistic director Gary Soerensen, students from Theatre, Music and Dance departments at LA Arts High have come together in the 2006 Musical Theatre Ensemble to hone their talent and their professionalism to levels far beyond their age. In Soerensen’s fifteen years at LACHSA, huge audiences have been thrilled by over two dozen musical theatre productions, including favorites such as 42nd Street, Dream Girls, Fame: The Musical, Fiddler on the Roof, Evita, South Pacific, Carousel, West Side Story, and A Chorus Line.
