Love, Locs & Liberation: A Solo Play
Love, Locs & Liberation weaves together writer and star Ella Turenne's own stories of struggles with identity and beauty. From rituals that Black women hold in relation to their hair, to Turenne's experience as an American woman with strong ties to her Haitian culture, the play explores many deeply personal issues. Blending poetry, song and humor, Turenne unlocks the history of locs, revealing many mishaps and triumphs. She explores the hair connection through the eyes of 21 different characters -- from a fifth grade bully to Madam CJ Walker. Watch her discuss politics, identity and culture, illustrating why hair is an intimate and essential part of Black life. This solo show hits Studio/Stage as part of L.A.'s Hollywood Fringe Festival.
