The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles continues the celebration of its 25th anniversary by holding its 21st Simply Shakespeare reading of The Merry Wives of Windsor. The participants for this rhinestone-studded cast in a down-home evenin’ that will be more colorful than a clown at a rodeo include Christina Applegate, Kenneth Branagh, Faith Hill, Eric Idle, Arte Johnson, Eugene Levy, Tim McGraw, William Shatner, Martin Short, Tracey Ullman and the co-chairs of the event Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, all of whom will be reading one of Shakespeare’s best known and beloved comedies.  Reba McEntire, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins will be the special musical guests.

The Merry Wives of Windsor is Shakespeare’s only play to deal with contemporary middle-class life of the Elizabethan age. The story centers around lovable rogue Sir John Falstaff, who arrives in the town of Windsor short on funds and attempts to seduce and swindle two local wives in order to set himself up comfortably. These original desperate housewives see right through his plan and lead him on a merry chase full of pranks.

The evening performance is directed by Ben Donenberg, founding Artistic Director of the SCLA.
