Lou Gossett Jr. directs Blood Knot starring A Martinez and Oscar Best, at The Malibu Stage Company. Gossett is best known for his Oscar winning performance in An Officer and a Gentleman, and he also won an Emmy for his performance in Roots and a Golden Globe for The Josephine Baker Story. Less known is the fact that he appeared on Broadway at the age of 17 and continued on the New York stage for many years to come. In fact it was his work in theater that kept him from playing for the New York Knicks when they drafted him out of high school. He is the founder of the Eracism Foundation which strives to bring all races on the planet into one human race.
Gossett has played the role of Zachariah himself and his experience and efforts have prepared him well for his directorial debut at The Malibu Stage Company. While watching him direct you can see him feeling the roles as if he is playing it again. The playwright, Athol Fugard, has written a script that is poetry, pathos, love and brotherhood and foremost, a masterful work of art. A Martinez and Oscar Best are both up to the task of bringing these characters to life.
A has starred on such television programs as Santa Barbara, All In the Family and The Bold and The Beautiful. In film he worked with John Wayne in The Cowboys and Meryl Streep in She Devil and with Gary Farmer and Wes Studi in Pow Wow Highway for which A won the best actor award at The Native American Film Festival. The film won best film at The Sundance Film Festival. Oscar Best appeared in Diagnosis Murder and recently in America’s Most Wanted and The Mindy Project, as well as starring in Malibu Stage Company’s production of Art.
