Learn more about SUP at Wikipedia.

Have you been down to the beach lately and noticed people standing up on sleek modern surfboards, paddling like the ancient Hawaiians and wondered what that’s all about?

Well, it’s the newest craze in watersports and it’s here to stay.  It’s called Stand-up Paddle Surfing (SUP for short).  Resurrected by famed big-wave rider Laird Hamilton, and others, SUP surfing and, now, just SUPing, period, offer a full-body workout unlike no other.  And, even better, not in a smelly, windowless gym, but out in the open water, be it ocean, lake, stream… SUPers are doing it everywhere!

If you’d like a demonstration of what this new form of exercise and recreation and, for the really skilled, sport is all about, Wade Lawson would like to show you. He’s a team rider for Tomahawk Paddle Boards and Stand-up Paddle boarding is his passion.  He’s been doing this for five years now.  For the last six years, he’s been a surfing instructor at Aqua Surf School in Santa Monica and has taught hundreds of people of all skill levels to ride waves.

The first thirty minutes of the lesson will be on the land. You will be instructed on fundamental applications, i.e., launching the board, paddle grip, proper stroke technique, tricks to maintain balance, etc. When everyone is feeling confident, Lawson will lead you into to the calm, flat water of Mother’s Beach to explore other techniques, such as maintaining direction and turning.
