One of the most amazing sights in nature is that of majestic whales swimming and playing on the ocean's surface, leaping out of the water and slapping their mighty tales. On this 2.5 hour cruise off the shores of Newport Beach, you may see giant blue whales during the summer and fall months or the annual grey whale migration bringing tens of thousands of grey whales along the coast during the winter and spring months. Huge pods of several species of dolphin are very common as are the resident sea lions. You may also catch glimpses of seals, killer whales, sharks and many other marine creatures. With a 96% success rate, almost every cruise has many viewing opportunities. An added plus is picturesque coastal backdrops of Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach. Learn More

Even though there's not really much there there--the cruise is INSIDE the marina amongst the docked boats--it's sort of the boat equivilant of driving really slowly through a very very big parking lot--it's a very pleasant couple of hours. The boat is a 1918 beauty that was owned for years by Mae West and they've clearly put a lot of money into it's upkeep. The crew too is first rate, from the captain to the three guys serving the cocktails and skimpy hor d'oerves. Given it's a no host bar, and the real dearth of munchies, this would be poor value at full price of $30, but for $15 it's a great one off midweek break for couples--and the weather cooperated nicely for us. I'm not sure we would do it again, but given the quality of the crew and boat, I'd be interested in some of Hornblower's other events, like weekend brunch cruises. Maybe Goldstar can hook up with them on some of those.
When work feels a little heavy, lighten things up on Hornblower’s Wednesday Night Sunset Cruise. This dynamic adventure dishes up complimentary appetizers, relaxing background music and specialty cocktails, craft beers and wine.
