Florida Grand Opera continues its season into 2013 by showcasing the talents of soprano Jeanette Vecchione in Mozart's whimsical opera, The Magic Flute
. Vecchione's previous performance as the Queen of the Night at Vienna State Opera commanded standing ovations each performance, and turned her into a YouTube sensation. Mozart's last operatic masterpiece is one of the most performed operas in the world because of its accessible story that portrays the struggle between good and evil in a fairy tale-esque fashion. Director Jeffrey Marc Buchman presents the story through the imagination of a 1950s teen who falls asleep reading a book and is transported into the tale in his dreams, taking the role of the lead character, Prince Tamino. The costumes and scenery show the dramatic difference between the waking world and fanciful dream world where the Queen of the Night sends Tamino on a quest to rescue her daughter from an evil sorcerer. His adventure is marked by dramatic plot twists as trickery and betrayals are revealed, along with the true villain.
