Acclaimed American poet and autobiographer Dr. Maya Angelou is one of the most renowned and influential voices of contemporary literature. Angelou’s remarkable career includes experience as a singer, dancer, actress, playwright, and Hollywood’s first female black director, but she is most recognized as a writer and poet. As a civil rights activist, Angelou worked for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, serving as the northern coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Dr. Angelou was one of the first African-American women featured on bestsellers lists with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. In 1993, she became the second poet in U.S. history to write and recite an original work at a presidential inauguration. Dr. Angelou’s poem for Bill Clinton’s inauguration was titled “On the Pulse of Morning,” for which she was awarded a Grammy award (Best Spoken Word). Recently, Dr. Angelou was awarded the Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honour, by President Barack Obama.
