54 Below salutes the legendary work of iconic songwriting team Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, two men who paved the way for modern musical theater with hit after hit in such shows as The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Carousel, Oklahoma!, The King & I and more. Their repertoire was huge, so each month at 54 Below, four of Broadway's most intriguing voices will put their own unique stamp on their favorite signature songs from the songwriting team, with musical direction by the extraordinary Andy Einhorn of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, now playing on Broadway. 54 Below is one of my favorite venues in the city, and Laura Benanti gave the perfect show. She earned every single one of those raves in the papers about this act, a charming blend of show tunes and pop, ranging from Jerome Kern to Lana Del Ray. Benanti was disarmingly at home bantering with the audience to the point where it almost felt like a dinner party in her living room.
