It's not just any orchestra that can take on New York's landmark Temple Emanu-El, a towering behemoth on 5th Avenue that's among the world's most awe-inspiring houses of worship. Luckily, the Orchestra of St. Luke's isn't just any old orchestra. As one of the country's most distinguished classical music ensembles, the Orchestra of St. Luke's has performed at Carnegie Hall, commissioned more than 50 new works and won four Grammys along the way. Now the 21 members of the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, the OSL's artistic core, are returning to Temple Emanu-El's hallowed halls to perform two classical masterworks befitting the venue: Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Mendelssohn's Octet in E-flat Major, Op. 20, a transcendent piece -- composed when Mendelssohn was just 16 -- that's been called "one of the miracles of 19th-century music."
