Ambassador Ido Aharoni Talks Churchill's Legacy
The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center - 66th Street, Between Fifth and Madison Avenues 10 East 66th Street New York, NY 10065
Not far from the Western Wall, an oversized bust of Winston Churchill overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem. It was erected not to honor the prime minister for Britain's near-impossible victory over Nazi Germany but to commemorate his support of the Jewish people and Zionism. Ambassador Ido Aharoni will discuss Churchill's relationship with Jews -- so out of sync with the fashionable anti-Semitism of his time and station -- as well as his struggles against government bureaucrats to assist Jewish refugees and establish a Jewish homeland. When he sits at New York's Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center, Aharoni will be joined in conversation by artist Edwina Sandys, Churchill's 79-year-old granddaughter.
