In the Heights: Lin-Manuel Miranda's First Musical
Before there was Hamilton, there was In the Heights. Lin-Manuel Miranda's debut musical, which he started writing as a sophomore in college, shows the origins of his trademark modern musical style, weaving rap, salsa and bodega music into catchy showtunes. The musical follows a variety of characters living in the neighborhood of Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the center of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging lady next door, pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon and dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, Usnavi's childhood friend, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents. They've spent their life savings on building a better life for their daughter, but the life they envision may not be what she wants. After a lot of angst and even more lively song and dance numbers, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighborhood finally embrace what it means to be home.
