Cappella Clausura's season at Eliot Church of Newton opens with First Ladies, paying tribute to five centuries of music for voices and strings by women who were first in their field. They include Amy Beach, the first woman to have a symphony performed by the BSO, and Rebecca Clarke, the woman who shared first prize for her viola sonata. You'll hear three duets by Francesca Caccini, the first woman to publish an opera, Ethel Smyth the first woman to have an opera performed at New York's Metropolitan Opera and Marianna von Martines, the first woman admitted to the prestigious Academia di Bologna. Finally, you'll enjoy the world premiere of a new work by Patricia Van Ness for string quartet and soprano, as commissioned by Cappella Clausura.
