I'm a huge fan of baseball, especially the era depicted in this show. I had grand expectations, and this fell short. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. I think I had just built it up in my head to be much better than it actually was. After getting our tickets from the box office window, we walked inside. Someone said we could grab a playbill, and there was a stack sitting on a bench. There was no direction, and we just waited in the lobby until right at 8p when someone announced the theatre was now open for seating. The theatre itself is beautiful and immaculate. I was blown away by the props and the theatre. The actors were great as well, especially the diner manager's sister. I think the story dragged on for the entire first half. The pace picked-up substantially after the intermission. Beyond the performance, I was expecting to be encountered by many senior citizens since this new theatre is part of the new senior center. I was disappointed that I only encountered 1 senior citizen (ticket taker). I'm hoping as the senior center fills up, the residents will take a more active role in the theatre.
Quotes & Highlights
“Director Darryl Johnson’s cast perform consistently well … There is much to enjoy here, especially if you’re a baseball fan.” -LA Weekly
“Director Darryl Johnson’s light touch saves the story from being bombastic or melodramatic, even as the characters’ revelations of their secrets unfold. Very well cast, the ensemble is perfectly natural and engaging. It is a fine-tuned production inaugurating the Road Theatre Company’s second space, The Road on Magnolia.” -ArtsInLA.com
“Powerful and poignant” —Nohoartsdistrict.com
“The multilayered journey and the final outcome here, are compellingly entertaining, and heart touching.” –_Tolucan Times _
“There’s not an unsympathetic character on the Road On Magnolia stage, and with director Darryl Johnson coaxing pitch-perfect performances from an impassioned Burroughs, a feisty Grant, a perky Shoemaker, a peppy McNeill, and vibrant Hu, there’s not a weak-link in the cast.”—StageSceneLA
