Hailed as "the best musical of this century" by Ben Brantley of The New York Times and "the funniest musical of all time" by Entertainment Weekly, The Book of Mormon won nine Tony Awards -- including Best Musical -- in its first year on Broadway. Now the national touring production is back at the Pantages for a second round of hilarity. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone along with Robert Lopez, the Tony-winning co-creator of Avenue Q, this musical comedy is a show that The Daily Show's Jon Stewart has called "a crowning achievement. So good it makes me angry." Learn More

This incredibly unique, if somewhat short, production sports quite a few 5 star ratings here on Goldstar, but that may actually work against it in an offhand way. My advice is; definitely see this wonderfully committed work, easily worth the Goldstar price of admission, but don't allow all that glowing Goldstar praise to over-heighten your expectations. Having said that, I will also say I was very entertained, overall, by this macabre collection of disturbing tableaus (and to a lesser extent, a couple scenes which can adequately be described as potty-horror), but left wishing I'd simply been more frightened. And I brought my extreamly easy-to-scare girlfriend with me worried she might leap out of her skin at some point during the performance, but she was cool with it all. The opening bit is especially unnerving visually, and one scene in particular later in the show definitely got a good jump out of me (which I loved!), but more than a couple skits had me wondering if a more inventive termination of the scene or more dramatic timing would've produced a more effective result. But critical nitpicking aside, definitely go and enjoy. Just don't get overly worked-up by too much of the Goldstar hype and you'll have a fun evening of truly stand-alone theatre.
