The young cast is generally excellent, with some stand-outs: Trevor Shor (Bobby) is fabulous -- a great voice and terrific actor; Angelia Formisano (Joanne) with great stage presence did a show-stopping "Ladies Who Lunch;" Bonnie King (April) was at once ditzy and sweet and not a bit irritating.
Sondheim's incomparable lyrics are tremendously challenging -- and a lot is lost in a combination of fast tempo and imperfect diction -- as in "Another 100 People" and "Getting Married Today." Some of the voices were very "young" and, like good wine, will improve with age.
The Waltmar Theater is a lovely venue; the only problem is limited street parking and the vagaries of the parking permit machines in the underground structure at Walnut and Center Sts. Allow plenty of time to find one that works, and then a space to put your car.
I recommend this lovely production to all Sondheim lovers.
