Grand and uplifting, Les Misérables is a powerful affirmation of the human spirit and one of the most popular musicals of all time. Woodminster Amphitheater hosts an outdoor production of this tale of passion and revolution in 19th-century France, which won seven Tony Awards on Broadway and was made into an Oscar-nominated film. Cozy up under a blanket and watch ex-convict Jean Valjean's struggle for redemption and the young, innocent love of his adopted daughter Cosette and the student Marius are set against the tumultuous backdrop of the French Revolution. It's a celebration of the human struggle for love, justice and happiness in the face of hardship, carried forward on a gorgeous score, including the beloved songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "One day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and more. Great fun. The principals especially were wonderful. Juliet radiated beauty, and happiness until the tragic part starts- then she went through the gamut of emotions flawlessly and convincingly. Romeo was convincingly in love, energetic, impulsive, totally romantic. All the supporting cast was good, especially the nurse/prince and Benvolio/mother- the supporting actors doubled. The young people conveyed early adolescence very well- active, funloving, bawdy, quarrelsome. The action was a bit too manic for my taste, and there were mild sadistic and homosexual overtones that seemed out of place for the play, though fine for the Bay Area. CalShakes, as always, is a friendly, beautiful place to spend an evening. We were glad we brought cushions for the hard seats and a blanket for the cold,- we didn't need the binoculars. Great fun.

Not a lover of Shakespeare, but found this performance to be simply wonderful! Beautiful setting and simply staged, the actors are so vibrant and engaging, that you're immediately drawn to this timeless story. Great theater in our own back yard.
Terrace seating does not have pre-placed chairs; you may bring your own low-backed beach chair or rent one on site for $3.00.
This venue is outdoors. The theatre provides complimentary blankets on chilly evenings, but remember to dress warmly for cool nights.
