French Romantic composer Jacques Offenbach never finished his 1881 opera, Les Contes D'Hoffmann
, but its witty libretto and wonderful score have made it popular around the world. Based on the works of the writer E.T.A. Hoffmann, the story finds a young French poet pining after the prima donna who's performing next door to his local tavern. While he waits for her show to end, he reminisces over three of his lost loves, in fanciful stories featuring a beautiful automaton, a voice from the dead and a scheming courtesan. The "Barcarole" is the most famed of its musical highlights and appears in the film Titanic
. This West Bay Opera offering is sung in French, with new English titles prepared especially for this production. José Luis Moscovich conducts.
